What is a lookalike audience?

A lookalike audience is a means for your adverts to reach new people who are likely to be interested in your company because they have similar qualities as your current consumers or people who already engage with your brand.

A lookalike audience uses an existing custom Audience such as people who like your Facebook page, visited your website, who have offered you their details from a lead generation form. To create a lookalike audience, Facebook has a tool that uses information such as demographics, interests and behaviors from your created audience, they then find new people who share similar qualities or interests. When you use a lookalike audience, your ad is delivered to that audience of people who are similar to (or “look like”) your existing customers.

When creating your lookalike audience, you can specify a percent range to determine how closely your new audience should resemble your original audience. The size you choose is determined by your objectives. Smaller percentages are more similar to your original audience, whereas greater percentages produce a larger, more diverse audience..

Facebook generally recommend a source audience that has between 1,000-5,000 people. However, the quality of your audience also matters. For example, you may get better results depending on your goals if you use an audience made from your best customers rather than one that includes all your customers.

I have had great results using lookalike audiences, especially finding new people who would already be interested in your brand or product, Facebooks AI is very intelligent and knows the correct people to put your brand or product Infront of.

How to create a lookalike audience? For this example I will walk you through how to create a custom audience then lookalike Simply go to “Audiences” in your Facebook business manager.

You will then see a screen like this one below, click “Lookalike Audience”

Then click “Create New Source” and then click “Custom Audience”

This will then bring you to this screen, select the correct source you would like to make a lookalike audience from. In my example I am clicking “Facebook Page”

Below you can see that I have selected my Facebook page “GMF Social Media Marketing” then the event is “Everyone who has engaged with this page ” then with the duration of 365 days. All that is left to fill out is the Name and Description. I would name this “People who have Engaged with GMF FB page past 365 days”

After creating this Custom audience, then you will be taken to a page that looks like this one below. Click “Create lookalike audience”

This is what the page will look like, you will select your “Lookalike source” then your country and finally the percentage. This example I have used 1% (Closest to my audience). You will see it is now finding 43,900 people who share similar characteristics as my page audience. Click “Create Audience” and you are done!

Alternatively if you didn’t need to make a new Custom data source, you could just select your “lookalike source” and find the source you would like to use.
